Spirit, Soul & Body

My wife and I spent a few days in Memphis recently. While we were there we visited the famous Sun Records Studio. It was a very moving experience to say the least.

Known as the birthplace of Rock & Roll the studio was operated by the late Sam Phillips in the 50’s and 60’s. Classic Rock & Roll songs were recorded there by Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and other artists who went on to great fame.

The musical significance of the place is stunning and as I looked around the room and the tour guide expounded on the history created there I became aware of a very real spiritual presence.

I don’t mean to be weird but as my emotions were stirred in that room I could sense the spirits of Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins…the Million Dollar Quartet!  No kidding! I didn’t want to touch anything, say anything or do anything. I just felt like being reverent. It was an incredible experience and I could say more but let me tell you what it really illustrated to me.

The spirit of a man never dies. It lives forever. The human spirit continues to influence and have impact long after the body dies and returns to dust. That influence can be positive or negative.

Do I believe the spirits of those musicians who recorded in Sun Studios many years ago are still there? I don’t have all the answers but I will say this.

I know the spirits of those people live on. The feelings and emotions I had in that studio were very tangible. I felt the impact of their creativity and spiritual presence still circulating in that humble little studio. It wasn’t weird or New Age but a revelation of the importance of their contribution and awesome story of humble beginnings that quickly influenced the entire world.

Does Elvis still live? Yes! He is a spirit, he has a soul and he lived in a body. You can no longer see him with your eyes but he lives on.

Don’t believe it? Just go to Memphis and visit Sun Records Studio.

Cogitate on this for a while.

  1. Thanks for telling us about that visit Gene. You’ve got me really wanting to go there and see it myself. I hope I get to.
