Listen To What You’re Saying!

One of the most asked questions is, “why do bad things happen to good people?” Everyone knows someone who didn’t get their healing though they seemed to have such great faith in God. Or when they need a financial miracle it doesn’t happen. Maybe that someone is you and you just can’t figure out why your need isn’t met or your miracle doesn’t come. You’ve done everything you know to do, you’ve been faithful in church attendance, Bible study, prayer and meditation, gone to special meetings and even been faithful in tithes and offerings but still no manifestation of your miracle.

What is in your mouth? I mean, what are you saying? What have you been saying? Most of the time you are defeated by your mouth! You are speaking the problem and not speaking the answer! I heard Charles Capps say that in the early 1970’s the Lord spoke to him and said, ” my people can have what they say but they are saying what they have!”

Try this. Just for a few days listen closely to what people are saying. Everyone you come in contact with is saying something. If you really listen (we learn more by listening than by talking and most of us talk too much!) you will begin to notice how negative people really are. You hear folks speaking their problems but nobody is speaking the answers! It’s no wonder so many of us are so stressed! We’re talking about the bad economy, the bad weather, how scarce jobs are, how sick we are, how bad our marriage is, how we hate our jobs, how we’ll probably get the flu this fall like we always do, how we probably will never get out of debt………do I need to go on? If you really start listening to what people are saying you will be amazed at how defeated people are and that they talk about it all the time!

Everything starts with what you say! God is the perfect example of that. Everything he does starts with a word. And God said, ” let there be light, and there was…” And God said, “let us make man in our image.” Do you see it? Words are containers. Words contain power to create life or the power to create failure and defeat. Everything God says comes to pass and everything you say comes to pass! Don’t believe it? Then listen to what you’re saying. What you have now is the result of what you’ve been saying all your life!

The scriptural foundation for this is Mark 11:23, “For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall SAY unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he SAITH shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he SAITH.” (emphasis added)

What have you been saying the last ten, twenty, forty or fifty years? Check up on yourself. Have you constantly spoken doubt, fear, unbelief, sickness, pain and misery? When you get sick do you talk mainly about your symptoms or are you saying what Jesus says about your disease? Are you saying what the doctor says or what Jesus says? He never spoke anything but healing, restoration and increase! The doctor deals with symptoms, Jesus deals with the cause and brings the cure!

Start paying attention to your words! What do your friends and family hear you saying? Stop speaking the problem and speak the answer. Speak the desired result. Do it in your everyday speech and by all means do it when you pray. Don’t pray the problem, pray the answer. Get in the Word and find out what it says about your problem.

Speak to your problem! That’s what Jesus did. Many times we really don’t need to pray about the problem we just need to speak to it and command it to obey. When Peter’s mother had a terrible fever Jesus didn’t pray for her. He spoke to the fever! When the disciples  thought the storm was going to sink the boat Jesus didn’t pray about the storm. He spoke to the winds and the waves and told them to be still! That’s what you should do! Speak to the cancer and tell it to leave in Jesus name. Tell that tornado to go over your house in the name of the Lord! Remember Mark 11:23.

Listen to what you are saying! Change the way you talk! Speak the Word and say what it says. It will change your life!

Thanks for cogitating with me!

One Of The Greatest Influences On My Life

William Lee Golden & Me

Joe Bonsall, Me & my radio partner Mark

Something happened today that turned my emotions topsy-turvy. It may sound silly but some of you will understand it. But first, I must go back about sixty years in time so you’ll understand where I’m coming from.

I don’t even remember the first time I ever attended a gospel concert. It was one of the all night singings which at that time started about 7 PM and did not end until after midnight. It was at the Shrine Mosque in Springfield, Missouri and the quartets featured were, The Blackwood Brothers and The Statesmen Quartet. Jackie Marshall was still playing piano with The Blackwoods and Bro Hovie, The Chief and The Statesmen rocked the house. Thats what quartets did back then. Four men singing with a piano player that could pound out the rhythm, and yes sir they rocked the house. My mother took me to see all the greats…..those were the days! By the time I was in my teens quartets were my passion and my desire to do that began to grow. So it was transfused into my blood at an early age and has never left. I’ve moved on to other styles of music but Southern Gospel Quartet music is my roots.

Just before I entered seventh grade my dad took a church in Seaside, California so we moved across country to a place that seemed foreign; an entirely different culture. It was very hard on me to leave Oklahoma wearing cowboy boots and overalls to  California where boys my age wore Levi’s, white socks and penny loafers. I believe however that the biggest thing that kept me grounded and possibly even sane was that many of my favorite quartets came to California a couple of times a year. We traveled to Los Angeles to the Long Beach Municipal auditorium for concerts and also to San Jose.

It was about that time when a quartet that I had never seen in concert began coming to the left coast. I fell in love with them and they became my favorite group as they are to this day. They were the Oak Ridge Quartet. Smitty Gatlin, Little Willie Wynn, Ron Page, Herman Harper and Tommy Fairchild. I loved their sound and Tommy Fairchild greatly influenced my piano playing style. I loved his rhythm and I concentrated on that. I listened to their records by the hour and learned to sing harmony by listening to each vocal part….I was blessed with an ear to hear it all. Everything I did was influenced by this group. I tried to comb my hair like they did, work the mic like they did and sing like them as much as possible. I was totally hooked on everything about The Oaks.

One particular concert will never leave my memory. It was at the auditorium in San Jose, California. A sold out show with The Speer Family, The Weatherford Quartet, The Rebels and of course The Oak Ridge Quartet. I cried at a lot of concerts because the music was so powerful and consuming to me. But this night was different. The Oak Ridge Quartet was singing and I got so emotional that I left my seat and went up to the balcony where I could be alone. It seemed the Lord met me there. The anointing came on me so strong that I couldn’t sit or stand. I just layed in the floor and cried for several minutes and was totally caught up in the Spirit. As I layed there the Spirit of the Lord showed me that I would be singing and performing just like The Oak Ridge Boys before thousands of people. He called me to sing that night. There was no doubt about it that night, and fifty years later there’s still no doubt. It was a defining moment of time in my life and The Oak Ridge Boys were a huge part of it.

I could go on and on but I will stop with those details. I just wanted you to understand what an influence this group has been to me. I followed their gospel music career and even though I had a hard time processing the move into country music, I remained a fan and am to this day.

I’ve been blessed to meet the Boys many times and have become well acquainted with Joe Bonsall and during my little more than a year on a Branson show when I worked with Duane Allen’s son Dee, I got to visit with and get acquainted with Duane who is one of the great singers of our time and a fine Christian gentleman as are William Lee Golden and Richard Sterban.

That brings me to my topsy-turvy emotions. Remember that?

I learned this morning that the Grand Ole Opry invited the Oak Ridge Boys to become permanent members of that great institution! I got teary eyed when I read the article. I haven’t been able to get it off my mind today. I’m excited for them and relieved that this invitation so long overdue, was finally extended. I quickly sent a text to Joe Bonsall congratulating them and as usual he quickly texted me back with his thanks.

Thanks to the Oak Ridge Boys for the wonderful impact they’ve had on my life and music and it’s exciting to know that it’s not over. It’s continuing on a great stage where many other greats have performed before them.

Long live the Oak Ridge Boys! One of the greatest influences on my life!

It’s been a good day…..and I’m still cogitating!

Watch What You Say!

Words are important. The words you say are very important. In fact, words are the most powerful thing in the universe! Everything starts with a word. Don’t believe it? Keep reading…..

Everything begins with a word. In fact, the very first chapter of the Bible illustrates this beautifully. Everything God SAYS comes to pass, and nothing happens until he SAYS it. Words bring light or they bring darkness. Before God spoke there was only darkness, Gen 1:2, “The earth was formless and empty, and darkness covered the deep waters…” NLT.  When God spoke a word there was light! Gen 1:3, “Then God SAID, Let there be light, and there was light” NLT.  You’ll see the phrase, “God said”, ten times in the first chapter of Genesis. And notice that a miracle always happens after “God said”! Are you beginning to understand how important words are?

The earth and the universe were created with words. God’s  words. So if words are important to God they are important to us. God spoke words filled with faith not doubt, and we must do the the same. Jesus spoke faith-filled words. He never spoke words of fear and doubt and neither should we!

Do you realize we are supposed to live our lives imitating God? The dictionary defines imitate this way:

…to mimic; impersonate; reproduce; have the appearance of; simulate; resemble…

Are you getting the idea that we are to act like, look like and SPEAK like God? Here is just one scritpure to support that: Eph 5:1 “Imitate God, therefore, in everything you do….” NLT.  The first way we should imitate God is with our words. The words we say should be filled with faith because faith-filled words bring light and success. Words of doubt bring darkness and failure. Most of us experience darkness and failure because of our words, Prov 6:1,2 “…Thou art snared with the words of thy mouth.” KJV.

I grew up hearing words of doubt, fear and unbelief. I grew up with a poverty, sickness and disease and failure mentality. “God keeps us poor to keep us humble and sickness comes mostly to put us on our back so God can teach us something.” Words like that were spoken over me by spiritual leaders, mentors and family members. “God might heal you if it’s his will” or ” He died at age 39 because God saw in the future that he would yeild to temptation and be lost so God called him home early”. The amazing thing is, those words always came true because thats what was spoken!

But thank God for revelation! This was revelation to me: Mk 11:22-25, “…Have faith in God. For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall SAY unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he SAITH shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he SAITH. Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.” KJV. Look at how many times those verses use the words say, or saith. Words…..your words are important!

Do you know that we can operate on the same level as God? We are not God but we can be like him and operate on his level. He made us that way so we can have the same success and results as he has! We are spirit beings, very capable of operating on the same level of faith as God. Mk 9:23, “..anything is possible if a person believes.” NLT. Matt 17:20, ” I tell you the truth, if you  had faith even as small as a mustard seed, you could SAY to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it would move. Nothing would be impossible.” NLT. Are you getting it? Words are important!

So, quit saying things like, ” I always get a cold this time of year “, or ” I’ll probably never get out of debt, I’ll always have a house payment.”  Those kinds of things happen to you now because you’ve been saying it all your life. Quit using the “death” word!  “That scares me to death”, or “that’s to die for” or “I just love you to death”. You might be thinking, “oh Gene I don’t really mean it like that, it’s just a figure of speech.” The Bible calls those words ‘idle’ words. You’ll give an account for idle words. Matt 12:36-37 “And I tell you this, you must give an account on judgment day for every idle word you speak. The words you say will either acquit you or condemn you.” NLT. You may believe it is a figure of speech but your words carry the power to create, whether positively or negatively. Your words are important. I’ve already showed you proof from the Word of God that we have what we say. Words are important!

More on this later. Just remember, every word you speak is important. So watch what you say!

Cogitate on that for a while!
